1815 Clark County Estray Book Entry:

Henry Ashebrannah; Date: 7 Dec 1815; Place: Clark County, IN; Estray Book: 1801-1817. Some early settlers didn't use fences to confine their livestock. County books were kept by the County Clerks Office to record the finding of stray animals. Any person who found a stray would be required to advertise their stray finding within the neighborhood where in the stray found. When no claim was made upon the stray they would make an oath before the justice of the peace. The oath made usually indicated that an animal with certain markings had been taken up. The justice would then issue a warrent for three disinterested householders to make an appraisal. After the appraisals were made the entry was made into the County Estray Book.

Charles Ashabranner Family Papers; Compiled/Organized by: Charles E Ashabraner; Compiled: [c.1920s].

  • This is a collection of family history notes and letters gathered and researched by Charles E Ashabraner. I transcribed these hanwritten documents, organized them, and annotated them with my comments in blue type. The original start date for this collection is not stated on any of the documents, but speculation based on certain events referanced might sugest sometime in the 1920s. A few updates were added as time went on.

Steven,
In the Indiana State Library's database of marriages thru 1850, I recently found a record of a marriage between Joseph Taylor and Catharine Ashabrann. The record is not retrievable when searching "Ashabrann," but it is for "Joseph Taylor." They were married in Wash. Co. on 4 Jan 1843. Given that Daniel was living in IL by the time of the 1840 census, I suspect that Catharine was a daughter of Henry. If I have the correct Catharine Taylor in the 1850 census for Wash. Co. IN, she was born about 1826 and thus could be one of Henry's daughters not yet identified in your blog.
